Fripp Island is a private, gated barrier island in Beaufort County, reached by a bridge from Hunting Island State Park, where U.S. 21 ends. Until that bridge was built in 1963, the only way on was by boat. The island's roughly 3,000 acres are a gated community and a designated wildlife sanctuary, and every driver coming on needs a pass from the security gate.
