Beaufort is South Carolina's second-oldest town, first planned in 1711, and its historic district has been a National Historic Landmark since 1973. The Richard V. Woods Memorial Bridge, a swing bridge opened in 1959 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2023, connects downtown with Lady's Island and the outer Sea Islands.
