New Iberia is the seat and largest city of Iberia Parish, on Bayou Teche about 20 miles southeast of Lafayette. Spanish colonists from Málaga founded it in 1779, and it still goes by the Queen City of the Teche. Iberia is one of Louisiana's leading sugar-producing parishes, the Shadows-on-the-Teche house has stood on the bayou since 1834, and Avery Island is nearby.
